Description

We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Cargo Underwriter to join the Cargo team in managing and growing a profitable portfolio of business. This role is ideal for someone early in their underwriting or insurance career who is eager to build technical knowledge, strengthen broker and client relationships, and develop further expertise in cargo underwriting.

 

The ideal candidate will bring strong analytical skills, a collaborative mindset, and an interest in learning cargo risk assessment, pricing, terms, and underwriting practices. Working with guidance from senior underwriters and leadership, this person will help evaluate risks, participate in portfolio management activities, and contribute to delivering strong service to brokers and clients.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Participate in the management of a portfolio of brokers, agents, and clients.
  • Reviewing and underwriting cargo business in line with company guidelines, pricing standards, and risk appetite.
  • Analyze underwriting information to evaluate risk, pricing, and policy terms and conditions.
  • Partner with senior underwriters and leadership to support profitable growth of the cargo portfolio.
  • Build and maintain strong working relationships with brokers, agents, clients, and internal business partners.
  • Perform business development and marketing activities by preparing insights, reports, and portfolio information.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams such as Underwriting Support, Claims, Actuarial, and other internal stakeholders.
  • Identify trends, opportunities, and areas for improvement through portfolio analysis and market research.
  • Participate in projects that support underwriting excellence, process improvements, and product enhancements
  • Continue building technical underwriting knowledge through training, mentorship, and day-to-day experience.
  • Escalate complex or unusual risks to senior underwriters or leadership as appropriate.
  • Stay informed on relevant market developments, regulations, and underwriting practices affecting cargo business.

Qualifications

Qualifications:

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, Finance, Risk Management, or a related field preferred.
  • 1–3 years of underwriting, insurance, finance, logistics, marine, cargo, or related business experience.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to evaluate information and make sound recommendations.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work well with internal and external partners.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment with strong attention to detail.
  • Interest in developing technical underwriting knowledge in cargo and marine insurance.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Excel; experience working with data and reports is a plus.
  • Progress toward CPCU or other insurance designation is a plus but not required.
