Description

The Senior Underwriter will underwrite Lawyers Professional Liability (LPL) policies within underwriting authority, with guidance from leadership as needed. Makes decisions on whether to accept or decline risks and on appropriate terms by applying analytical, data-driven judgment to submissions, including pricing, limits, retentions, and appropriate policy wording (claims‑made triggers, retroactive dates, extended reporting periods). In parts of North America may underwrite complex or unusual LPL placements or high individual line size accounts — including large firms, multi‑state/provincial practices, and matters with significant regulatory, securities, or class‑action exposure.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Manage a portfolio of law firm broker/agent relationships and client accounts focused on Lawyers Professional Liability. Serve as Liberty’s representative to specialty brokers who place LPL business and work to strengthen and expand those relationships.
  • Underwrite submissions across a range of law firm sizes and practice areas (e.g., litigation, corporate/M&A, real estate, trusts & estates, tax, IP, employment, family law). Assess exposures unique to each practice area (e.g., securities filings, contingency fee matters, escrow/trust accounts, e‑discovery, privacy/confidentiality risks).
  • Evaluate firm‑level risk factors including claims/disciplinary history, partner/senior counsel quality, governance and supervision, engagement letter practices, conflict checking systems, client matter mix, billing arrangements, subrogation/indemnity exposure, and supervision of non‑lawyer staff.
  • Structure policy terms specific to LPL: determine appropriate limits, retentions, aggregated or per‑claim deductibles, sublimits (e.g., disciplinary proceedings, cyber/privacy), retroactive dates, extended reporting period options, and policy endorsements. Recommend reinsurance placement needs when applicable.
  • Use data, actuarial guidance, benchmark loss metrics and rating tools to price risk and monitor profitability of the LPL portfolio. Contribute to rate adequacy and territory/line‑of‑business segmentation discussions for the LPL product.
  • Partner closely with Claims, Actuarial, Legal, Risk Management, Underwriting

Qualifications

  • Degree in Business or equivalent typically required
  • A minimum of 2.5 years, typically 3 or more years, of progressive LPL underwriting experience and/or other related experience
  • RPLU or professional insurance designation preferred
  • Proven analytical ability to evaluate and judge underwriting risks within scope of responsibility that includes competence with all phases and aspects of the underwriting process, and proficiency in the use of qualitative and quantitative tools and techniques
  • Must demonstrate comprehension of complex technical underwriting issues and be capable of defining and implementing necessary underwriting and administrative processes/workflows to properly manage or administer those issues
  • Proven track record of developing and underwriting profitable business
