Description

The Middle Market Executive Technology Underwriter builds and manages a profitable middle‑market Technology P&C book by selecting and pricing risk, developing strong broker/agent relationships, and providing market-facing leadership. This role drives new business and retention, mentors less‑experienced underwriters, documents decisions for compliance, and partners with underwriting resources (actuarial, claims, engineering) to improve portfolio performance.

 

Key responsibilities

  • Risk selection & pricing: Underwrite, rate and structure accounts across the technology sector (e.g., software/SaaS, hardware, IT services, cloud/cyber exposures), apply underwriting judgment and guideline authority, obtain required approvals, and prepare clear proposals and bindable offers.
  • New business development: Proactively market products and cross‑sell capabilities to brokers/agents, identify and close profitable opportunities, and develop a sustainable pipeline of quality business.
  • Broker/agent relationship management: Build strong, trust‑based relationships through responsiveness, onsite visits, renewal meetings and tailored solutions; act as a visible, reliable market contact.
  • Portfolio management: Analyze book performance, identify concentration, growth and profitability opportunities, and execute targeted marketing plans to improve diversification, premium growth and margin.
  • Documentation & compliance: Maintain complete, well‑reasoned submission files and underwriting documentation that reflect decision rationale, referrals, sign‑offs and adherence to state regulations and underwriting guidelines.
  • Leadership & mentorship: Coach, mentor and formally guide junior underwriters and account analysts; provide regular feedback to management and contribute to team knowledge sharing.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with actuarial, claims, risk control, legal and product teams to refine appetite, develop solutions for complex risks, and support claims mitigation strategies.
  • Continuous improvement: Propose and participate in process and tool enhancements; use underwriting analytics and system tools to drive efficiency and consistency.

 

Qualifications

  • Degree in Business or equivalent typically required
  • A minimum of 7 years expected, typically 10 years or more, of progressive underwriting experience and/or other related business experience
  • CPCU or professional insurance designation preferred
  • Proven analytical ability to evaluate and judge underwriting risks within scope of responsibility
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate complex analyses and information in understandable written and/or oral directives to other persons in the organization for underwriting or training purposes
  • Demonstrated effective communication and interpersonal skills in dealing with internal and external stakeholders
  • Must demonstrate comprehension of most complex technical underwriting issues and be capable of defining and implementing necessary underwriting and administrative processes/workflows to properly manage or administer those issues
  • Proven track record of developing and underwriting profitable business

The full salary range for this role reflects the competitive labor market value for all employees in these positions across the national market and provides an opportunity to progress as employees grow and develop within the role.
