At Liberty Mutual, the Insights & Solutions group uses data, analytics, and technology to deliver innovative solutions that drive our US Retail Markets business forward. Within it, the Claims Data Science team focuses on developing sophisticated AI/ML driven solutions to help create the most accurate, caring, and efficient claims organization in the insurance industry.

 

The US Retail Markets Claims Data Science team is hiring a People Leader to lead a new team focused on AI Measurement and Sophistication, with a particular focus on Generative AI applications, and with additional responsibilities for advancing our AI/ML Ops capabilities.

 

Sophisticated applications of Generative AI could help us summarize claim files, answer adjusters’ questions, review adjusters’ work, draft customer communications, and more. The successful candidate will lead a small team of Data Scientists while collaborating with Engineers, Product Owners, Architects, UX experts, and other professionals, to build these systems. They will also lead efforts to measure the accuracy of these systems, while ensuring robust ML Ops capabilities across Claims Data Science.

About the role:

      

  • Lead a small team of Data Scientists and help them develop in their careers by setting clear goals and expectations, inspiring high performance, leveraging a diversity of perspectives, and supporting them as they grow and develop.
  • Collaborate with Engineers, Product Owners, Architects, UX experts, and other professionals, to build sophisticated AI applications.
  • Advance our sophistication across key aspects of AI application design, including foundation model selection, RAG system design, agentic application development, prompt engineering, and more.
  • Advance our abilities to measure the accuracy and effectiveness of these systems, including both human expert feedback and algorithmic evaluation.
  • Ensure that our team’s ML Ops capabilities continue to advance and adapt to new technologies and best practices.
  • Collaborate with Technology and Data teams to ensure that their medium- and long-term decisions are informed by the needs of Data Scientists.

Qualifications

  • Expert knowledge of Large Language Models, RAG systems, agentic frameworks, and associated technologies.
  • Comfort working in complex data ecosystems with multiple stakeholders.
  • Deep knowledge of predictive analytic techniques and statistical diagnostics of models.
  • Expert knowledge of predictive toolset, to include highly technical tools.
  • Proven ability to lead and drive projects and assignments to completion through others, to include prior experience effectively managing talent.
  • Demonstrated ability to exchange ideas and convey complex information clearly and concisely, verbally, visually (presentations and exhibits), and in writing, consistent with the audiences and stakeholders with which s/he interacts.
  • Ability to establish and build relationships within and outside the aligned functional area or SBU. Ability to give effective training and presentations to management and other groups.
  • Presents to senior or functional department leaders or executives.
  • Broad knowledge of business drivers and market context.
  • Has a value driven perspective with regard to understanding of work context and impact.
  • Competencies typically acquired through an advanced degree (in Statistics, Mathematics, Data Science or other relevant field of study) and 5 to 7 years of relevant experience or may be acquired through a Bachelor`s degree (scientific field of study) with 10 years of relevant experience.
  • Prior experience leading people preferred.
  • Knowledge of Claims processes and technology preferred.
  • Insurance or financial services industry experience preferred.

The full salary range for this role reflects the competitive labor market value for all employees in these positions across the national market and provides an opportunity to progress as employees grow and develop within the role.
