Description

We are seeking an experienced, strategic Executive Underwriter to lead underwriting for our GRS Public Entity Educational portfolio. The successful candidate will combine deep technical underwriting expertise in educational public entities (K–12, charter schools, community colleges, public universities, and related districts) with proven leadership in portfolio management, pricing and distribution. This role will drive profitable growth, strengthen broker and client relationships, and shape product and risk-mitigation solutions across the educational segment.

Key responsibilities

  • Underwrite and approve complex new business and renewal submissions for educational public entities, ensuring sound risk selection, appropriate terms and conditions, and profitable pricing.
  • Own portfolio performance: monitor profitability, retention, loss ratios and exposure concentration; recommend corrective actions, rate plans and portfolio rebalancing as needed.
  • Lead underwriting strategy and product development for the education segment, including coverage enhancements, endorsements, and loss-control programs tailored to school systems and higher-education exposures.
  • Partner with sales, broker partners and client stakeholders to structure competitive placements, negotiate terms, and present underwriting rationale to senior decision makers.
  • Collaborate with actuarial, claims, risk control and reinsurance teams to develop pricing models, refine appetite statements and quantify reinsurance needs.
  • Mentor, coach and develop underwriting staff; establish underwriting standards, training programs and performance metrics.
  • Prepare and present underwriting recommendations and portfolio updates for executive committees and boards.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, underwriting guidelines and company policies.
  • Represent the organization at industry forums, conferences and client meetings to strengthen market presence and thought leadership in the education sector.

Qualifications

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; degree in Risk Management, Insurance, Finance, Business, or related field preferred.
  • 8+ years of underwriting experience with a significant focus on public entities and/or educational institutions; prior leadership experience strongly preferred.
  • Professional designations preferred (CPCU, ARM, AIC, or equivalent).
  • Demonstrated ability to originate and close new business, grow retention and improve portfolio profitability.
  • Strong technical skills: pricing, actuarial collaboration, exposure analysis, contractual wording review, and claims interaction.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and presentation skills; effective at influencing C-level stakeholders.
  • Strong analytical ability and comfort using Excel, underwriting systems, and data analytics tools.
  • Proven leadership and people management skills; experience building and coaching underwriting teams.
  • Ability to travel as required (client visits, conferences, regional meetings).
