This role has a hybrid work schedule (2 days onsite) and we are considering candidates based in Portsmouth, NH and Boston, MA.

 

 

Job introduction:

 

Global Finance Technology (GFT) is looking for a passionate, driven, technical engineering leader to work as the Director, Engineering to support our Strategic Incremental Modernization of Premium & Loss flagship program. SIMPL is GFT’s strategic program to simplify and streamline premium & loss financial and regulatory capabilities aligned with finance business priorities, supporting Corporate, GRS and USRM. This team is a critical contributor to the development, delivery, and support of the long-term Finance ecosystem product vision.

 

This Director will be responsible for managing SIMPL Finance & Regulatory portfolio of 35+ LM professionals, external delivery contracts of 50+ people, and managing a budget of ~$15-20M+ / annually with a sharp focus on optimizing delivery and Making IT Spend Count.

 

Primary Delivery Expectations:

  • Lead the delivery and ongoing support of the SIMPL program to enable finance and regulatory capabilities across key portfolios, including USRM Frontier, GRS’ Evergreen, USRM Small Commercial initiatives, and Enterprise Reinsurance.
  • Drive the strategic replacement of legacy mainframe applications with SIMPL as the core platform foundation, ensuring robust, scalable data ingestion and curation processes for premium and loss data.
  • Oversee multiple cross-functional teams and simultaneous delivery tracks as the SIMPL program scales, ensuring alignment, collaboration, timely execution, and proactive identification, mitigation, and resolution of risks and issues to drive successful program outcomes.
  • Optimize the staffing model and managing resource capacity and costs to support program growth and operational efficiency.
  • Contribute to the strategic architecture vision for long-term data ingestion into Finance, starting with domestic data and partnering with architects from GFT, GRS, USRM to gain alignment on design & delivery.

 About the job:

  • Develops and implements business and/or technology vision, critical success factors, and operating plans; develops and communicates department/enterprise vision, strategies, and high-level migration plans.
  • Anticipates and manages technology evolution and relates it to business solutions. Sets direction based on alignment to business and overall technology standards.
  • Ensures system, technical, and product architectures are aligned with business objectives and include active management of technical debt and system health to maintain architecture integrity and enable long-term scalability.
  • Advocates and models agile leadership techniques, coaching managers and teams to embrace continuous improvement and adaptive delivery practices.
  • Hires and manages managers and may hire and manage individual contributors, coaches and counsels team members, especially managers, regarding management approaches.
  • Determines and manages staffing strategy and plan (# of FTEs, skills needed, depth of experience, internal and external staffing mix) consistent with departmental needs; ensures execution of decisions related to hiring, firing, and promotions.
  • Defines individual performance objectives and development plans and ensures alignment with project and department objectives; appraises and evaluates department and individual performance, making compensation recommendations and overseeing the appraisal process.
  • Oversee vendor relationships beyond delivery, including contract management, resource transitions, and ensuring external teams are fully integrated into the program culture and processes.
  • Establishes the financial plan for the department and manages to plan; ensures project financial plans are met by managers; jointly establishes financial targets with business partners.
  • Oversee the development, implementation, and execution of multiple projects ensuring scope and schedule are established; manages the operating plan and resource allocation including prioritization and staff deployment; acts on changing priorities as needed.
  • Formulates and executes process and organizational improvement initiatives that enhance overall effectiveness; proactively seeks ways to improve human resource and other management processes; understands business processes, issues/problems, and applies appropriate IT standards and solutions.
  • Ensures compliance with regulatory, audit, and governance requirements by operationalizing controls and change management protocols throughout program execution.
  • Initiates and fosters business partnerships with current and potential clients, vendors, IT executives, and senior business executives; develops relationships that promote trust and increase efficiency and effectiveness; balances individual client needs with business priorities assuring alignment with business strategies and objectives.
  • Develops and maintains a network of industry contacts; performs or directs research on industry trends, competitors, business and IT products; analyzes trends and makes strategic and tactical recommendations.

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's Degree in technical or business discipline.
  • Minimum 10+ years of Software Engineering related experience.
  • Minimum 5+ years in a leadership role.
  • Minimum 5+ years’ technical experience leading projects and portfolio management.
  • Create a compelling and flexible implementation roadmap. Operate as a subject matter expert for Finance Systems in the portfolio, be a point of contact for integration with upstream and downstream processes.
  • Manage financial and regulatory complexities. Ensure adherence to enterprise design, technical architecture, standards, audit and change management. Operationalize solution through hyper-care and transition to support teams.
  • Manage projects including resource allocations, financials/budgets, work plans, issue & risk management, and status reporting.
  • Dynamic leader who can energize multi-disciplined work teams to develop and execute strategies based on current and anticipated needs.
  • Provides direction in resolving conflicts, as well as coaching poor performers to improved levels of performance.
  • In-depth knowledge of IT concepts, strategies and methodologies and their application to business opportunities. In-depth knowledge of business operations, objectives and strategies.
  • Advanced knowledge of management concepts, practices and techniques. Ability to promote a team environment consisting of several teams.
  • Highly developed negotiation, facilitation and consensus building skills.
  • Highly developed oral and written communication skills; strong presentation skills.

The full salary range for this role reflects the competitive labor market value for all employees in these positions across the national market and provides an opportunity to progress as employees grow and develop within the role.
