Working with a team of analysts that have expertise in natural hazards, engineering, catastrophe risk and insurance risk modeling, this team is charged with creating the Liberty view of catastrophe risk.

Capable of designing and managing research projects, supervising junior team members, coordinating project application directly with business units. Minimum of CSCR level understanding of catastrophe models and their gaps and shortcomings, with experience building tools designed to creatively supplement those models.

 

Job Responsibilities

  • In-depth analysis and interpretation of third-party catastrophe models including evaluation of new model releases. This role will be the model lead for either the US or international hazards, but will be expected to collaborate on projects across the full suite of global perils.
  • Support climate-related impact assessment on catastrophe risk, including research, analytics, and regulatory reporting.
  • Independently develops model adjustments for established perils and regions to align with Liberty’s portfolio of risks, and guides team members on benefits and tradeoffs of model adjustment approaches. This includes post-event assessment of models and adjustments for emerging hazards.
  • Coordinate with broader R&D team as needed to create custom tools for non-modeled and poorly modeled risks, as well as development of tools and novel techniques for evaluation of models and model results. This includes use of GIS as well as other analytical products.
  • Identification of potential large loss scenarios to which Liberty may be exposed and involvement with assessment of emerging risks.

Qualifications

  • 5 - 7 years catastrophe management experience within the insurance and/or cat modeling industries and experience mentoring junior analysts 
  • A graduate degree (i.e., master or PhD) is preferred, with demonstrated experience in advancing complex projects and working with interdisciplinary teams of scientists, engineers, and risk analysts. Graduate degrees may include but are not limited to relevant expertise in hydrology, wildfire, geosciences, meteorology, or a related field, and engineering especially civil, environmental, etc.
  • Comparable additional catastrophe research experience may be substituted in lieu of a graduate degree. 
  • Demonstrated proficiency in verbal and written communication to a wide variety of audiences.
  • Superb data mining skills, with experience in working with large data sets. 
  • SQL experience is a plus.
  • Coding experience in Python or R preferred.
  • Experience in geospatial analytics and working with GIS applications.
  • Experience with identification and analysis of catastrophe exposures across multiple lines of business
  • Superior ability in research and analysis functions
  • Experience in training others on modeling systems
  • Superior communication and project management skills
  • Presentation skills important
