Liberty Mutual is seeking an experienced Resident Attorney with strong leadership and strategic management skills to lead and optimize the operations of our legal office. The ideal candidate will oversee all litigation activities, manage caseloads, and drive innovation in legal service delivery while fostering a culture of compliance, ethical practice, and continuous improvement. Reporting to the Regional General Attorney, this role combines hands-on litigation expertise with strategic oversight and team leadership.

 

Responsibilities:

 

  • Lead Office Operations: Manage the daily work of the legal office, including staff assignments, budgeting, and resource planning. Make sure the office runs smoothly and meets its goals.
  • Oversee Litigation: Guide and improve all court cases handled by the office. Help attorneys use the best legal strategies and provide mentorship to improve their skills.
  • Manage Caseloads: Distribute cases fairly among attorneys based on their experience and the complexity of the case. Monitor progress to make sure cases are handled efficiently and resolved on time.
  • Ensure Quality and Compliance: Review work to ensure it follows company policies, legal rules, and ethical standards. Maintain a culture of integrity and compliance.
  • Build Strong Relationships: Work closely with claims leadership and other departments to improve how cases are managed and resolved.
  • Drive Improvements: Identify ways to make legal work more efficient and cost-effective. Introduce new ideas and tools to enhance performance.
  • Recruit and Develop Talent: Lead hiring efforts to bring in skilled attorneys and staff. Support ongoing training, mentoring, and development to build a strong, collaborative team.
  • Communicate Effectively: Provide updates and legal insights to leadership, helping them understand trends and risks that impact the company.
  • Lead Complex Cases: Handle difficult litigation matters personally and provide guidance on tough legal issues when needed.

Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor (JD) or LLB degree from an accredited law school.
  • Admission to the Bar and in good standing.
  • Minimum of 7 years’ experience as a practicing trial attorney, including management experience overseeing legal teams or offices.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills with ability to manage full office operations and legal metrics effectively.
  • Strong expertise in insurance defense litigation, including auto, premises liability, and general liability.
  • Proven ability to develop and implement effective litigation and risk management strategies.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with ability to influence and persuade senior executives.
  • Skilled in building collaborative relationships across legal, claims, and business units.
  • Experience driving process improvements and embracing innovation in legal services.
  • Commitment to ethical standards and compliance with legal and regulatory requirements.

The full salary range for this role reflects the competitive labor market value for all employees in these positions across the national market and provides an opportunity to progress as employees grow and develop within the role. Some roles at Liberty Mutual have a corresponding compensation plan which may include commission and/or bonus earnings at rates that vary based on multiple factors set forth in the compensation plan for the role.
