Pay Philosophy

The typical starting salary range for this role is determined by a number of factors including skills, experience, education, certifications and location. The full salary range for this role reflects the competitive labor market value for all employees in these positions across the national market and provides an opportunity to progress as employees grow and develop within the role. Some roles at Liberty Mutual have a corresponding compensation plan which may include commission and/or bonus earnings at rates that vary based on multiple factors set forth in the compensation plan for the role.

Description

Ensures a profitable book of business by appropriately evaluating the acceptability of risks within established authority levels. Demonstrates decision making authority with limited supervision, making subjective quality exceptions to retain profitable business. Communicates with assigned agents on any rejected risks to educate on market appetite and explain underwriting guidelines. Markets Company products and services to agents and actively participates in the agency management process. Responsible for working with and protecting confidential and proprietary customer and Company information.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Accepts, rejects or modifies new and renewal business for all Personal Lines with limited guidance to ensure a profitable personal book of business.
  • Reviews risk acceptability to make subjective decisions based on underwriting guidelines ensuring standards for state compliance regulations are met.
  • Responsible for managing a field of agents to achieve Company growth and profitability targets.
  • Develops on-going relationships with agents, conducts outbound calls with agents to discuss market appetite, quality of submissions and encourage profitable growth.
  • Additionally, keeps agents up-to-date on underwriting and/or product changes.
  • Manages a complex book of business to maximize profitability and growth.
  • Reviews loss ratios and growth for agents when evaluating and making agency exceptions.
  • Mentors newer underwriters and is a resource within underwriting department.
  • Partners with Agency Performance Management team and Territory Managers to identify trends and patterns that might create problems and works with agents to correct.
  • Trains and educates agency staff on Company products, services, underwriting philosophy, etc.
  • Performs other support functions as needed.

  • May promote the Company's product and services by networking within the insurance community to stay abreast of changes within the industry.

This is a remote position, candidates reside within 50 miles from the Hub may be required to report in office.

Qualifications

  • BA/BS degree or equivalent experience (insurance experience preferred)
  • One to two years of underwriting or relevant experience required
  • Knowledge of Personal Lines' products and contract knowledge preferred
  • Proficient in underwriting and thorough knowledge of regulatory and policy differences among states in which business is transacted
  • Actively working toward professional designation(s) preferred
  • Demonstrates negotiation skills
  • Achieves excellent quality results and the highest referral list
  • Proficient PC skills and capable of working multi-faceted systems
  • Ability to effectively and independently manage work load while exhibiting good judgment
  • Strong verbal communication and phone skills
  • Excellent grammar and written communication skill required
  • Must have strong relationship building skills with agents and other departments and exemplify teamwork
