Some roles at Liberty Mutual have a corresponding compensation plan which may include commission and/or bonus earnings at rates that vary based on multiple factors set forth in the compensation plan for the role.

Description

Liberty Mutual Surety is currently looking for a Commercial Surety Senior Underwriting Manager. This role is responsible for managing a team of Surety Underwriters and Surety Underwriting Managers. Drives a culture of underwriting excellence across the entire assigned portfolio. Accountable for full suite of management responsibilities, including attracting talent, development, and pay and performance management, including how well managers within the team are delivering their leadership responsibilities. Recognized as a top subject-matter expert. Manages all aspects of Core Commercial Surety underwriting operations for the Western US region.

 

Responsibilities

  • Act as a point of escalation/referral on the most complex underwriting and high-impact decisions. Leads and partners with senior management on the workforce and succession planning for assigned office/territory.
  • Ensures that new underwriters are trained and/or supported by experienced underwriters/managers with respect to technical underwriting issues and meetings with producers/ customers.
  • Shares industry knowledge and underwriting expertise with less experienced underwriters.
  • Creates, develops, and drives team performance, clearly communicating expectations and performance measures and takes decisive action when performance is not meeting expectations.
  • Drives employee engagement through effective execution of talent management practices. Establishes employee development/growth plans to address skill enhancement opportunities.
  • Prepares the budget and business plans including marketing, underwriting, training, and administration functions.
  • Coordinates the management functions for the staff and the assigned product line and territory.
  • Handles and analyzes complex accounts and obligations.
  • Has expert level competence with all phases and aspects of the underwriting process, and in applying underwriting guidelines to the most complex accounts and bond obligations.
  • Expert ability to discuss and interpret complex financial statements, other financial information, and the related bond and account risk factors.
  • Understands the surety products and capabilities of competitors. Defines key differentiators versus major competitors. Discusses the types of competition that will be faced in the future. Monitors and analyzes market activity, agency penetration and successes/losses against key competitors.
  • Maintains productive, long-term relationships with producers/agents and/or customers, both internal and external, with particular focus on multiple or large producers/customers.
  • Applies expert competence managing multiple or large producers, portfolio of business, or country operations.
  • Negotiates unique or special compensation or incentive programs with individual producers or customers, which may include soliciting feedback from producers to gauge their level of satisfaction.
  • Plans, implements, and manages change effectively in a variety of significant settings.
  • Employs available and relevant resources for identifying and implementing change.
  • Translates the desired organizational traits to tactical steps and procedures.
  • Anticipates impact of change accurately, both positive and negative.
  • Works with team to identify and remove obstacles to change and support continuous improvement.
  • Monitors effectiveness of the change effort with particular attention to extent of acceptance.
  • Considers impact of changes outside own unit or organization.
  • Determines and implements appropriate communication messages to ensure understanding of the change.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Business or equivalent typically required.
  • A minimum of 10 years progressive commercial surety underwriting experience expected, including a minimum of 4 years of proven underwriting management experience, preferred.
  • Proven analytical ability to evaluate high impact underwriting risks within scope of responsibility.
  • Demonstrated expert-level ability to communicate complex analyses and information.
  • Demonstrated effective communication and interpersonal skills in dealing with internal and external partners required.
