Pay Philosophy

The typical starting salary range for this role is determined by a number of factors including skills, experience, education, certifications and location. The full salary range for this role reflects the competitive labor market value for all employees in these positions across the national market and provides an opportunity to progress as employees grow and develop within the role. Some roles at Liberty Mutual have a corresponding compensation plan which may include commission and/or bonus earnings at rates that vary based on multiple factors set forth in the compensation plan for the role.

Description

Responsible for managing a team of Surety Underwriters and/or Surety Underwriting Managers. Drives a culture of underwriting excellence across the entire assigned portfolio. Accountable for full suite of management responsibilities, including attracting talent, development, and pay and performance management. Accountable for quality and quantity of work, personnel, performance appraisals, new business acquisition and profit and loss (financial) results of assigned territory, team or office. Monitors business portfolio and meeting new business target, premium, and expense budgets.

 Responsibilities: 

 

  • Works with senior management on the workforce and succession plan for assigned office/territory. Promotes mobility across the Surety organization.
  • Ensures that new underwriters are trained and/or supported by experienced underwriters or managers and shares industry knowledge and underwriting expertise with less experienced underwriters. Cultivates an inclusive environment that makes others feel valued.
  • Manages all aspects of a territory or field office (typically considered small to medium in scope) or assists in managing a large territory or country operation. May include regulatory or legal responsibility for supporting country operations.
  • Is a significant contributor to the budget and business plans including marketing, underwriting, training, and administration functions.
  • Coordinates the management functions for the staff and the assigned product line and/or territory. Services the surety needs of customers and manages profitability, risk mitigation, growth strategies, and metrics for specific accounts and assigned underwriting portfolio.
  • Understands and analyzes complex accounts and obligations. May help others with interpreting and drawing reliable conclusions from financial data.
  • Understands and applies insights of the surety products and capabilities of competitors. Defines key differentiators versus major competitors. Discusses the types of competition that will be faced in the future. Monitors and analyzes market activity, agency penetration and successes/losses against key competitors. Adapts strategies to adjust to specific circumstances.
  • Has a strong producer/agency/customer network across a small-to large premium territory. Is knowledgeable about and responsive to business trends as they affect a state, country, region, or territory. Coordinates development and implementation of individual marketing plans in assigned marketplace.
  • Demonstrates strong competence managing multiple or large producers. Understands and can negotiate unique or special compensation or incentive programs with individual producers/customers. Responds to questions, follows up on issues, and makes and keeps commitments.
  • Mentors staff members and/or direct reports to position Liberty Mutual Surety to be considered a Trusted Advisor, including the solicitation of feedback from producers/customers to gauge their level of satisfaction.
  • Has negotiated compensation and account proposals, or related matters with diverse producers and products under varied market conditions. Takes an expanded view of the producer/customers overall needs and aligns them with company goals. Participates in cross-selling or otherwise expanding business with producers/agents as needed. Designates or acts as a Key Relationship Manager for specific agents/producers/customers.
  • Participates in/leads planning change management effort for own team or product line.
  • Conducts periodic reviews of work effort, progress, issues, and successes. Creates opportunities to educate support teams on client priorities. Participates in negotiating the terms of the business relationship.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Business or equivalent typically required. A minimum of 10 years progressive surety underwriting experience expected, including a minimum of 2 years of proven underwriting management experience, preferred. Proven analytical ability to evaluate high impact underwriting risks within scope of responsibility. Demonstrated ability to communicate complex analyses and information. Demonstrated effective communication and interpersonal skills in dealing with internal and external partners required. Must possess the following skills, abilities, and attributes: strong leadership skills, development of people, strategic thinking, sustained effective portfolio management and profitable growth, communications skills, decision-making skills, results-oriented, industrious, innovative, problem-solving skills, coaching and mentoring skills, and negotiating skills. Proven track record of developing and underwriting profitable Surety business.
