Pay Philosophy

The typical starting salary range for this role is determined by a number of factors including skills, experience, education, certifications and location. The full salary range for this role reflects the competitive labor market value for all employees in these positions across the national market and provides an opportunity to progress as employees grow and develop within the role. Some roles at Liberty Mutual have a corresponding compensation plan which may include commission and/or bonus earnings at rates that vary based on multiple factors set forth in the compensation plan for the role.

Liberty Mutual Surety is seeking an Underwriting Officer to join our growing Subcontractor Default Insurance (SDI) team. As a leadership position, the Underwriting Officer must have the ability to articulate thoughts clearly while influencing and leading with integrity. The Underwriting Officer will engage in thoughtful underwriting and engagement of customers, as well as establish and oversee the execution of business strategies, underwriting standards, and operating objectives. This position includes marketing products and services to key agents and brokers throughout the United States and Canada and may also include managing a team of underwriters and risk engineers.

Responsibilities:

 

  • Underwrite and select risks with appropriate pricing and terms, through the review and analysis of financial, capacity, and operational systems and controls. Participate and/or lead planning efforts (as assigned), coordination, and implementation of the SDI Business Plan.
  •  Market products and services through agencies/brokers. Develop, leverage, and maintain strong agency/broker and Insured relationships.
  • Assist with new product development, implementation, and oversight. Champion underwriting excellence across the business. Support the development, implementation, and execution of processes for Product Line leadership and Liberty Mutual Senior Management.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams such as claims, operations, legal, and actuarial. Ensure an optimal portfolio management strategy delivering sustainable and profitable growth to the organization. Enhance the use of data/analytics and technology.
  • Provide strategic guidance and support on key underwriting and growth initiatives. Lead, develop, and motivate team members.
  • Demonstrate the value we bring to the different segments of our producer delivery network. Leverage strong broker relationships to effectively promote and represent Liberty Mutual with customers and at industry events.
  • Demonstrate industry thought leadership through training, presentations, panel participation, podcasts, and other communications. This position may include management responsibilities.
  • Special projects as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor`s degree or equivalent experience, MBA preferred; undergraduate degree in business, engineering, math, statistics or actuarial science is desired.
  • 10 years underwriting, broker or general contractor risk management experience typically expected with in-depth knowledge of Subcontractor Default Insurance.
  • Broad understanding of the construction industry, strategic operational risks and opportunities; Ability to identify vulnerabilities in controls in the management of subcontractor exposures.
  • Demonstrates experience in continuous improvement in identifying, analyzing and improving upon existing business processes for optimization and to meet new standards of quality
  • Strong analytic, numerical, communication (written and verbal) and leadership skills will be essential.
  • Experience in an underwriting, broker, or general contractor environment; field interactions and support.
  • Demonstrable track record of profitable transactions and generating business growth consistent with executing business plans.
  • Leverage strong broker relationships to effectively promote and represent Liberty Mutual.
