Description

The Chief Underwriter (CUO), North America Middle Market is a newly created and central role on the GRS NA Office of Underwriting and Middle Market leadership teams. The individual will have a high-profile role both internally and externally, and potential for long-term growth. The role has dual accountability to the Presidents of NA Underwriting and Middle Market for underwriting strategy and P/L impact for the Middle Market Sub-Segment. Responsible for partnering with MM profit center leaders to drive Appetite across the Sub-Segment to ensure appropriate consistency, best practices and clarity to all stakeholders. This role will work with the GRS NA Underwriting Office and Middle Market leadership to identify profit enhancement and growth opportunities including the development of reinsurance strategies to drive towards GRS NA Target Portfolio.

 

Strategy & Planning: 

  • Acts as liaison between NA UW office and MM leadership to help with alignment on the sub-segment underwriting strategy and annual financial plan,
  • Sets reinsurance strategy for the sub-segment in conjunction with the MM profit center leadership needs
  • Partners with Office of UW and MM leadership to set the strategy of plans for pricing, risk origination, market segmentation and risk selection and monitors performance

Execution: 

  • Responsible for execution and delivery of quality assurance activities within the segment, following the central framework established by the NA Office of Underwriting
  • Establishes authority limits and referral criteria at the sub-segment level, cascading down within the overall GRS NA CUO’s framework
  • Monitors execution of sub-segment underwriting strategy and portfolio performance against plan; handles any referrals escalated
  • Monitors developments in the relevant markets and risk environments that could impact sub-segment portfolio performance, and partners with MM leadership to developaction plans for identified risks and opportunities
  • Drives effective cross-functional collaboration and support with sub-segment level functional teams

Talent Management: 

  • Provides strong leadership to continually upgrade sub-segment underwriting talent through training, development, and partnership on recruitment

UW Capability Development: 

  • Determines sub-segment underwriting investment needs to continue monitoring and/or executing effectively, including data capture or strategy, advanced analytics, technology, and talent

Industry Experience:

    •  
      • At least 15 years of experience in underwriting specialty, property and casualty, managing a team of underwriters. Experience in relevant markets, with knowledge of sales and distribution channels. 

 Technical Underwriting Expertise:

    •  
      • Product, pricing & underwriting expertise in Commercial & Specialty Lines. Manages company underwriting results to achieve corporate profitability. 

 Transformation & Innovation:

    •  
      • Experience in providing innovative underwriting solutions. A track record of challenging the status quo. 

 Leadership Experience:

    •  
      • Influential senior executive with Underwriting P&L experience. Leader with a strategic mindset and demonstrated relationship-building ability that provides direction for the underwriting operations.
