Litigation Counsel

Liberty Mutual Insurance has an exciting opportunity available for a highly qualified attorney who is an experienced litigator. In this role, you will advise the Company in complex litigation, including but not limited to: extra-contractual suits, declaratory judgment actions, insurance coverage disputes, and bankruptcies. In this role you will provide legal advice to assist the company in mitigating and resolving litigation and reputational risk, while maintaining high standards of legal and business ethics and professional responsibility.  May be primarily responsible for litigation matters within one of three Litigation Teams aligned by product line: Property, Auto, or Liability/Specialty.

*Typical Starting Salary is $155,000-$188,000

Responsibilities:

• Provide high quality oral and written legal advice in a cost-effective manner to internal clients.
• Liaison between internal clients and outside counsel to efficiently manage financial exposure and achieve client goals.
• Advise clients and other legal partners on business policies and practices to mitigate potential litigation risk.
• Perform comprehensive research and analysis of reported cases, statutes, regulations and other legal materials regarding issues often characterized by an absence of clear legal precedent.
• Render clear and unambiguous legal opinions and advice as necessary.
• Retain and direct local defense counsel on assigned matters throughout the United States.
• Review and coordinate litigation strategy, including discovery responses, internal documents and communications and preparing corporate witnesses for hearings, deposition and/or trial.
• Identifies emerging legal trends, lessons learned, and best practices, and contributes to knowledge sharing and continuous improvement initiatives across the larger litigation team.
• Attend and report on mediations and trials as necessary; up to 10-20% travel.
• May assign, direct and review the work of law clerks and paralegals.
• Conduct training for internal clients.
• Other duties may vary according to issues and/or internal client involvement. 

• J.D. or L.L.B. degree and admission to the bar of at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
• Minimum of 5 to 7 years experience as a practicing attorney, with substantial insurance (personal and commercial lines) litigation experience in private practice and/or as in-house counsel.
• Excellent analytical, legal writing and communication skills, client focus, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple priorities.
• Familiarity with corporate operations and individual business unit objectives, and demonstrated ability to interact with internal stakeholders, outside counsel and representatives of other companies and adversaries.
• Demonstrated familiarity with emerging legal technology and AI-enabled tools, including the ability to assess, leverage, and oversee appropriate use of such tools in litigation strategy, matter management, legal research, discovery, and analysis while ensuring compliance with legal, ethical, confidentiality, and privilege obligations.
• Trial experience preferred.
• Maintain current knowledge of legal issues and developments in the law.

Pay Philosophy: The typical starting salary range for this role is determined by a number of factors including skills, experience, education, certifications and location. The full salary range for this role reflects the competitive labor market value for all employees in these positions across the national market and provides an opportunity to progress as employees grow and develop within the role. Some roles at Liberty Mutual have a corresponding compensation plan which may include commission and/or bonus earnings at rates that vary based on multiple factors set forth in the compensation plan for the role.
