Principal Litigation Counsel

Liberty Mutual Insurance has an exciting opportunity available for a highly qualified litigator who has deep expertise in handling class actions as well as extensive commercial litigation experience within the insurance and financial services industry.  This role will be responsible for handling class actions, investments litigation, complex bankruptcy matters, employment litigation and other litigation as assigned, while also partnering with the Litigation Leadership Team on portfolio strategy, reporting, and  dedicated oversight of certain high-profile, complex matters outside the core product teams.

Typical Starting Salary is $207,000-$248,000.

Responsibilities:

• Handle large-scale class actions, investment-related matters, employment matters, complex bankruptcies, extra-contractual and insurance coverage matters (personal and commercial lines) and other complex commercial litigation matters as assigned.
• Provide oversight and reporting for the class action, investment, bankruptcy and/or employment litigation portfolios across the Litigation Group.
• Define litigation strategy and risk approach for matters within the litigation portfolio, with visibility across teams and business units.
• Advise the Litigation Leadership Team and other senior stakeholders on significant litigation exposure, strategic implications, mitigation options and recommended actions.
• Anticipate litigation trends across the portfolio and drive proactive risk mitigation, escalating consequential developments early and providing training as needed.
• Utilize and leverage technology as a strategic advantage, identify opportunities to shift work to the right delivery model and setting expectations for AI-enabled improvements, consistent with applicable legal, confidentiality and governance requirements.
• Contribute to refining standards, frameworks and best practices for class actions and specialty litigation.
• Elevate team capability by sharing expertise, mentoring junior legal professionals and contributing to knowledge management across the Litigation Group and the GL&C department.
• Manage outside counsel on litigation portfolio matters driving quality, strategy, efficiency and timeliness.
• Build trusted relationships with the Litigation Leadership Team, senior business partners, and outside counsel.

• Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school.
• Admission to, and good standing with, at least one US state bar; ability to meet applicable in-house practice requirements; requires at least 12 years practicing law
• Substantial experience handling class actions, extra-contractual and insurance coverage matters (personal and commercial lines), bankruptcies, employment matters, investment-related litigation and/or other complex commercial litigation.
• Demonstrated ability to lead complex litigation matters independently and define strategy in ambiguous, high-stakes environments.
• Experience advising senior stakeholders on enterprise litigation risk, exposure, mitigation strategies as well as reporting oversight of a litigation portfolio.
• Strong judgment, written and oral advocacy, negotiation and communication skills.
• Ability to synthesize complex information into clear, strategic, actionable recommendations.
• Commitment to confidentiality, professional responsibility, sound legal judgment and ethical use of technology.
• Experience with precedent-setting, enterprise-wide litigation within the insurance and financial services industry, including class actions, employment, and financial services litigation.
• Prior in-house counsel experience overseeing and managing class actions and complex extracontractual litigation within a personal and commercial lines insurance company
• Broad cross-team or cross-portfolio litigation expertise.
• Demonstrated use of AI-enabled tools and alternative delivery models to improve legal quality and speed.
• Experience building portfolio reporting and oversight frameworks, or developing the capabilities of other legal professionals.
• In-depth experience in the insurance, financial services or other highly regulated industries.

Pay Philosophy: The typical starting salary range for this role is determined by a number of factors including skills, experience, education, certifications and location. The full salary range for this role reflects the competitive labor market value for all employees in these positions across the national market and provides an opportunity to progress as employees grow and develop within the role. Some roles at Liberty Mutual have a corresponding compensation plan which may include commission and/or bonus earnings at rates that vary based on multiple factors set forth in the compensation plan for the role.
